FOX 34 Float 831 - Eurobike 2013

Aug 28, 2013

A Burlier 831

FOX's 831 dirt jump and slope fork has, up until now, been based on their 32 chassis, with the 32 referring to the diameter of the fork's stanchion tubes. The result was a relatively light overall package - FOX claims just 3.67LB with a tapered steerer - although many wondered why FOX didn't utilize their torsionally stiffer 34 chassis given the fork's intentions, including some of their sponsored riders. 2014 will see a brand new 831 model that does exactly that, with it being based around the burlier 34 fork chassis. The weight penalty is slight - FOX says it comes in at 4.26LB - but word from their riders is that they are noticing a dramatic improvement in rigidity, especially when landing off-kilter. Interestingly, they are also reporting a pronounced boost in rigidity on take off, which doesn't come as a surprise when you consider the loading forces that likely occur when a rider sets up for a difficult trick on a jump face.

FOX 34 Float 831 Details

• Intended use: dirt jump
• Travel: 100mm/4''
• FIT CTD damper
• Dirt jump specific valving
• Extra progressive air spring
• Kashima coating
• Taper steerer tube only
• 15QR thru-axle
• Weight: 4.26LB
• MSRP: TBA

The 34 Float 831 is far from a standard 34 internally, and you'd be mistaken for thinking that its FIT CTD cartridge makes use of stock 2014 valving. Yes, the fork's CTD dial still features the three 'Climb', 'Trail', and 'Descend' denotations, but FOX has drastically altered the latter two
damping circuits to better suit the 831's intentions. As you might expect, both the Trail and Descend settings see a far firmer tune that is more in line with what a dirt jump or slope rider is looking for, that being a much more supportive stroke that not only allows for maximum pop off of a lip but also able to absorb overshooting a landing or coming in nose heavy. The fork's air spring volume has also been adjusted with this in mind, and it features a far more progressive ramp up for the very same reason.

While the new 34 Float 831 does make a lot of sense, it should be mentioned that it will only be available with a tapered steerer tube. This fact means that some riders who own steel dirt jump frames with a standard 1 1/8" head tube are out of luck. It is for this reason that FOX will keep the current 32 831, with its optional straight 1 1/8" steerer tube, in the lineup until demand fades.
